For support coordinators, hospitals & families
Not sure if you are eligible for NDIS funding? Understanding the access criteria is the first step. This guide explains what you need to know to determine if the NDIS is available to you.
The NDIS is available to people with a permanent disability that significantly impacts their ability to participate in community, education, employment, and daily life. Here is what you need to meet the scheme's eligibility requirements.
You must be under 65 years old when you first apply to the NDIS. (You can continue your plan after 65 if already approved.)
You must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have been a resident for at least 2 years.
Your disability must be permanent (likely to continue for the person's lifetime or be of long duration).
Your disability significantly affects your ability to participate in community, education, employment or other activities.
You gather your supporting documents and complete the NDIS access request form. Strong documentation makes a difference. Medical reports, functional assessments, and a clear personal statement help the NDIA understand your situation.
You send your completed application to the NDIA through their online portal. The NDIA conducts a preliminary review to see if you have provided all required information.
The NDIA makes a formal decision. You are either approved, conditionally approved (more information needed), or declined. This usually happens within 21 days, though complex cases take longer.
Once approved, you work with an NDIA planner to develop your personalised NDIS plan. This is where you define your goals and the supports you need to reach them.
Your plan is finalised and you can start accessing services. You set up agreements with service providers of your choosing and your support begins.
Letters or reports from your GP, specialist, or allied health professional confirming your diagnosis and current status.
Reports that show how your disability affects your daily activities and participation. Psychologist, OT, or speech pathology reports.
School reports, assessment results, or educational psychologist letters if disability affects learning.
A personal statement explaining your disability, its impact on you, and what support you need. This is often the most compelling document.
Records of support you have already received (therapy, schooling support, informal assistance) demonstrate ongoing need.
Birth certificate, passport, or proof of residency to establish your eligibility.
Not necessarily. The NDIA focuses on functional impact, not diagnosis. However, some form of medical evidence that supports your access request is essential. Consult with your healthcare provider about what documentation is most relevant.
You have the right to appeal. If the NDIA determines you do not meet the disability or functional impact criteria, you can request a review with additional evidence.
From application to plan implementation typically takes 8 to 12 weeks. The access decision is usually made within 21 days, then plan development takes another 4 to 6 weeks.
The NDIS website (ndis.gov.au) has detailed information about eligibility, the access process, and how to apply. You can also contact the NDIA directly for guidance on your specific situation.
